Feminist GA was an offering created by the Women Occupying Wall Street (WOWs) in New York! WOW was Women Occupying Wall Street, a caucus of OWS that included women and female-identified people and their allies of any gender. WOW worked for gender justice and an end to gendered violence both inside and outside Occupy. The Feminist GA goes far beyond OWS. But we understand the vital role of gender justice to Occupy’s vision of an economically just, democratic society that promotes the well being of everyone, not just the 1 Percent. There are lots of definitions of feminism. Some people reject the word altogether. That’s something the GA is grappling with. But we decided to use the word because we believe *feminism*powerfully sums up a worldview: one that rejects the domination of one ngroup by another, be they men, the wealthy, or well-armed nations.
In 2012, we rocked it in Philly! We brought the voices of the 51% of the 99% in a Feminist General Assembly (FemGA). The turnout was amazing with people from all across the country participating and engaging in shared values and meaning of feminism and how it has affected their lives. This gathering was attended by feminists of all genders. (View)
The FemGA resulted in two working groups — action and women’s declaration. On the Fourth of July in 2012, we went into action creating a “Revolution Now” human billboard in front of Independence Hall and singing songs of peace along the July 4th parade route.
